Georgian Bay and its Tributaries
If you are one of many anglers that believes big water equals big fish, then Georgian Bay should be the place to catch the next world record. Georgian Bay which is situated in the northeastern portion of Lake Huron has all the necessary ingredients to produce giant musky and pike. Georgian Bay is so big it's practically a great lake in itself. This massive watershed dilutes angling hours with many areas experiencing little or no fishing pressure all year. The bay has other big fish pluses with record walleye, tiger musky,
giant pike, trout and salmon giving anglers opportunities to catch multiple species all within the same general area. There's hundreds of miles of bait
filled waters to search for these giant fish. Georgian Bay showed that it produces fast-growing musky, with the average 48-inch musky (30 pounds), being only 7 to 11 years old! Georgian Bay has already yielded plenty of big fish, with Ken O'Brien's 65-pound I.G.F.A. world record out of the Moon river area topping the list.
Ken's fish measured 58" long with an amazing 30.5" girth and estimated to be about 29 years old.
Although just about all of Georgian Bay and its connecting waters harbor huge muskies I prefer to concentrate my efforts on two major areas. I spend over 90% of my time fishing and guiding the famous
Moon River area of Georgian Bay. This is one of the most elite musky fishing areas in the world! This water has world record potential and has not only produced the 65lb Canadian record, the long time Ontario record Walleye but many other muskies in the 50lb to 60lb sizes. The Moon River Basin is a structure fisherman’s paradise with countless miles of excellent Musky, Pike, Walleye and Bass habitat. Prime areas include the thousands of islands, bays, points, saddles, reefs and shorelines. The water is crystal clear in the lower Moon River Basin with visibility as much as 30 feet in some areas. Although the winds can be very strong at times you can always find shelter in the upper parts of the river or behind one of the many islands. The shoreline is lined with rocky mountainous terrain that is covered with trees and bush. The Moon River also has less cottages and less fishing pressure compared to other inland lakes which is primarily due to a good portion of the
upper Moon River not being charted and because most of the Moon River is surrounded by
the
Massassaga Provincial Park land.
The other area I like to fish and have been doing so for the last 20 years is the area from Byng inlet to the lower French River Delta. I primarily fish this area in the spring for pike and walleye. This area is in the northeast corner of Georgian Bay in a river filled system comprising of the Bad River, French River, Pickerel River, Key River and Byng inlet/Magnetawan River. This area has also produced giant musky, huge pike and large runs of spring and fall walleye. Much of this area is boat access only and far from major cities so the fishing pressure is very light. This means practically untouched water with good potential for giant sized fish.
